| PARENT
INPUT: |
| |
| At all times, this
program needs and appreciates comments, suggestions and feedback from
you, as parents, as we attempt to provide a beneficial and quality child
care program for your children. Please bring any concerns, suggestions,
questions, etc. to any staff person. If, for any reason, this does not
bring satisfaction, refer your concerns to the supervisor or Parent Volunteer
Board of Directors. |

| CLASS
SIZE: |
| |
| Trenton Children's
Centre is licensed to accommodate 15 children (18 months to 30 months)
per half day session in the toddler program with a ratio of 1 caregiver
to every 5 children. Children do not need to be toilet trained. 24 children
(30 months to 5 years, with 3 children 2 years of age) per half day session
can be accommodated in the preschool program with a ratio of 1 caregiver

| |
| DAILY
ACTIVITIES & EVENTS: |
| |
| Children at this
centre benefit from exposure and participation in the program using a
wide variety of equipment and materials that help develop and enhance
many skill areas. Interest centres and activities are planned around a
monthly "Theme" of interest. Activity centres (dramatic play,
puzzles and manipulated toys, books, blocks, arts and crafts, sand, water
and play dough) explored by the children will increase and encourage many
age appropriate skills of development such as: attention span, language
skills, fine and gross motor skills, listening, social and sensory skills,
problem solving skills, sorting, patterning and classification skills,
self image, confidence, leadership, imagination, eye-hand coordination,
memory, cooperation, sharing, concepts of size, colour, shape, time management
and planning, predicting, role playing, responsibility, sensory and tactile
skills, creativity, self help skills, decision making and numerous others.
The "Theme" is always chosen keeping the children's needs and
interests in mind. Activity centres are enhanced by planned and implemented
circle, art and gross motor activities revolving around the specific theme. |

| TOYS
FROM HOME: |
| |
| Except for toys
or items necessary for the transition from home to school, we prefer individual
toys or items from home stay at home or on your child's hook, as we cannot
ensure these items will not be broken or misplaced. Guns, swords, and
other toys of destruction or violence are not encouraged. If your child
insists on bringing a favorite toy or item to school, he/she is encouraged
to give friends a turn. |

| SPECIALIZED
SERVICES: |
| |
| Trenton Children's
Centre is an integrated centre for ALL children. This allows and encourages
children of ALL abilities to grow and develop with each new experience.
Qualified resource consultants, with staff, develop and implement programs
to suit individual special needs of children and assist with support and
information. Integration allows children, staff and parents the opportunity
to recognize and accept different abilities in all individuals. Our child
care centre also offers a referral service to parents involved in our
program as well as to others in the community and surrounding areas to
assist in finding alternate child care arrangements (private or licensed).
Also a listing of pertinent facilities in the area which provide special
services for young children and other child care facilities outside of
the area is available. Trenton Children's Centre is licensed for 5 early
arrival and late pick-up spaces per session. Children may be delivered
20 minutes before session begins and picked up 30 minutes after session
ends with approval of supervisor. A nominal fee will apply. |

| CLOTHING
FOR SCHOOL: |
| |
Think of your
child's comfort and independence and provide simple clothing that is
free of complicated fastenings. We recommend washable, durable clothing
and footwear, keeping in mind messy but fun art materials and activities.
Smocks are provided to protect clothing; however, paint and/or glue
may still end up on children's garments. An extra set of clothing (well
labeled) may be brought and hung on your child's hook.
Parents of toddler room children are asked to provide a small supply
of diapers and any other items your specific child will require at toiletting
time. These should be stored in your child's backpack and carried back
and forth as we do not have storage for these items. We do have a supply
of clothing for children requiring occasional changing. If you have
any children's clothing (underwear, socks, shirts, pants) to donate,
we would appreciate it.
For safety reasons, soft soled shoes are best and it is not necessary
to have an indoor pair and an outdoor pair. We remind you that slippers
or sock feet are not satisfactory. Proper footwear is very important
for traveling up and down the stairway, as well as for fire drills.
Many parents choose to leave a well labeled pair of running shoes at
the centre to prevent them from being forgotten.
Outdoor activity is an essential part of our program in all but extreme
weather. We are out of doors daily, if possible. Please be sure your
child is always dressed appropriately for the weather in order to have
the most enjoyable and comfortable time out of doors.
Also, if there is any time when you feel that your child is not well
enough to participate in outdoor play, please be reminded that all staff
are required out of doors with the children so that they are well supervised.
Therefore, we are not able to provide a staff member to stay indoors.
You may wish to return before outside time to pick up your child.

| |
| FIRE
DRILLS: |
| |
| In accordance with
requirements set out by the Day Nurseries Act and the Fire Department,
monthly fire drills will occur. Fire procedures and fire emergency plans
are posted in the classroom and reviewed by staff regularly. Occasionally
an unplanned evacuation of the building is held by the fire department.
Staff do their best to comfort and reassure the children, but some children
still find this a frightening experience. We ask that regular discussions
be held at home to help prepare the children. |
| |
| NUTRITION: |
| |
| Daily nutritious
and dentally sound snacks are provided by the centre and the monthly snack
menu is posted on the parent board. Snack contributions are not a requirement
but donations of snack foods and juices model sharing skills for the children
and greatly stretch our budget. In accordance with Ministry of Health
regulations, we do not accept foods or juices that have been prepared
off the premises. All donations must be unopened and in their original
packaging. We also do not accept any foods or juices that are not nutritionally
or dentally sound. Due to many serious allergies and related health concerns
regarding peanuts and their products, these foods will not be made available
or provided by the centre on the snack menu. Please be aware of our anaphylaxis
policy. Birthday celebrations are observed by the centre, although birthday
cakes are discouraged by the centre due to high content of sugar. |
| |

| PARENT
PARTICIPATION: |
| |
| A parent volunteer
Board of Directors holds monthly meetings at the centre for the purpose
of discussion and decision making on issues related to the successful
operation of the centre. No experience is necessary as all volunteers
learn together how to effectively achieve and maintain the goals of Trenton
Children's Centre. This is an opportunity for involvement and interaction
with other parents of the centre. The preschool and toddler programs continue
to be effective only with the involvement, participation and support of
the parents. Parents are notified by monthly newsletter of upcoming meetings
and encouraged to attend. |
| |
| FUNDRAISING: |
| |
| Trenton Children's
Centre, similar to many child care programs, is a non-profit, charitable
organization. With rising costs in all areas of operation, it is necessary
to supplement our revenue from fees paid with various fundraising events.
All parental support and involvement is greatly needed and appreciated
in the various fundraising events. All contributions of time and effort
allow our centre to continue in providing a quality and beneficial child
care centre. |
| |
| PROGRAM/STAFF
DEVELOPMENT: |
| |
| Trenton Children's
Centre program content is regularly evaluated to reflect changes within
the Day Nurseries Act and current trends in early childhood education.
Program content is reviewed during monthly board meetings with all parent
input discussed and considered. Monthly newsletters provide information
regarding program content, program changes, meetings, special events,
workshops and seminars. Staff are evaluated annually, expected and encouraged
to participate in planning sessions, workshops, lectures, seminars, and
regularly scheduled staff meetings and program planning sessions. Staff
also make any information available to parents, enabling them to become
knowledgeable and informed about child care and development. |
| |
| CHILDREN'S

not be in attendance in the following situations:
* fever, vomiting, diarrhea within last 24 hours

Any outbreak of communicable disease must be reported to the centre
immediately to enable us to notify the local health department and information
is posted for other parents of the centre.

handbook are followed or medical attention sought. When emergency action
appears to be warranted, the child will be transported by ambulance
or vehicle to the nearest hospital immediately. A staff member will
accompany the child and bring child's emergency information. In case
of an injury or accident (emergency or non-emergency) child will be
comforted, supervised and reassured by staff. An accident report will
be forwarded to parent and kept in child's file. In case of serious
