Shannonville is one of the world's most versatile and safest motorsport parks. It's unique design offers advantages to the public and industry that cannot be found anywhere else. Use of the facility by professional race teams, car & motorcycle racing schools, clubs, high performance car & motorcycle street-oriented schools, industry & media for vehicle testing, T.V. programs & commercial production, keeps the park busy every day of the week.
The phenomenal growth of Shannonville originates from very humble beginnings. A succession of racing enthusiast owners brought the track from total obscurity to the forefront of Canadian motorsports. It has become one of the most popular and exciting facilities in North America and certainly the busiest.
As the years passed and ownership changed hands,
- John Nelson 1974 - 1977
- Jack Boxtrom 1978 - 1986
- Raymond David 1987 - 1992
- Jean Gauthier 1993 - present
Shannonville came to symbolize the increasing growth of the motorcycle roadracing community while offering car racers a new venue and excellent teaching facilities. A tower, technical center and grandstands were added, along with other extensive improvements.
The most important changes to the track began in October 1986, when SMP was sold to Canadian insurance businessman, Raymond David. Like previous owners, David was a racing enthusiast and competitor. When David took control, SMP underwent intense upgrading, including the FABI track, new grandstand, control and administration towers.
Jean Gauthier had been on the board of directors of Shannonville for 5 years, from 1988 til 1992. In 1993 he bought the track from Raymond David. Gauthier built a link between the Nelson and Fabi track, creating the Pro track. The Pro track is the fastest circuit at Shannonville (2.47 km). To the delight of the competitors, the four track configurations are quite different. Gauthier has also enlarged the Fabi pits and the entrance to the pits.
The original track, now called the Nelson Circuit in honor of founder John Nelson, is 1.8 kms of tight demanding pavement that breeds aggression in racers.
The 2.23 Fabi circuit was named after Raymond David's protege, Bertrand Fabi. Fabi won three Formula 2000 racing titles in Europe before his tragic and untimely death in a testing accident at Goodwood, England. The circuit is flowing and technical, rewarding an intelligent, precise style of racing.
The 14 corner Shannonville circuit is 4.03 km long, has a minimum width of 11.0 m and combines the best of both short tracks. The connecting portions add a highly technical sweeping left and a fast narrow chicane. The circuit is tough, varied, demanding and offers excellent traction.
The addition of the 1/4 mile drag strip has revived the immensely popular sport of drag racing in Eastern Ontario.
An excellent skid pad facility, compliments the flexibility of the Shannonville complex.
While constructing the course, builders leveled the property to allow exceptional runoff room and placed guardrail only where safety dictated. This has made Shannonville ideal for instruction and the addition of the skid pad completed the requirements for a perfect training/testing facility.
Four highly successful schools are now based at SMP;
The Bridgestone Racing School: courses in Camero Z-28 & Pontiac Trans-Am racing, including a multilevel school racing series in formula 2000.
The Pontiac Performance Driving School: offers services designed to improve the street and safety skills of driving enthusiasts.
The Fast Riding School: "Everything included" motorcycle skills and safety courses, up to advanced superbikes, plus a racing series.
The R.A.C.E. Riders School: an entry level, competition oriented motorcycle training program.
Private or club rental of all SMP tracks and facilities is available. Full catering and hospitality may be arranged exculsively via SMP's Food Services.
You are hearby invited to join the thrills and racing action at SHANNONVILLE MOTORSPORT PARK; the ultimate in motorsport excitement.
