My 1990 RC30 was bought new by Andrew Schwartz of
Northville Michigan. When I picked it up it had only 1,928 miles on it.
It was better then new as Andrew (who has a better set up in his basement
then most performance shops I know) had carefully broke in the engine and
made all sorts of fine adjustments. (he made his own tools to set and tighten
the steering head bearings, added an external "hot" terminal for boosting
or charging the battery etc.) Getting it across the border into Canada
is another story! (The picture of the NS400R & RC30 was taken the morning
after I got the RC home)
After about four weeks of easy riding (approx. 600
miles) I spun two main bearings. After a long search I found five
similar cases. One was documented in an American Motorcycle publication.
I learned that some dip sticks have a slight curve to them and will give
a false reading if inserted wrong. (It is also very important to note that
the bike has to be vertical and level.) Combine that with a slightly less
then perfect design and you have the recipe for disaster. So make sure
you always check the oil the same way and keep it at or slightly above
the top level. Honda was very good in supplying all the parts for the rebuild,
at NO CHARGE! (Thank you Honda Canada) But will not comment on the problem.
The engine was rebuilt by Ontario Honda in Toronto. At the same time I
had them do some mild head work.
There is much I could tell you but for now I'll
just say that the time came to part with this beauty. I have many found
memories of this bike and will miss it. Maybe some day I will be able to
afford another one.
If you are interested in buying an RC30 please contact
me. I don't know of all the little problems but I have learned of a few
things that you should be aware of. (like the above story).
