GROSSE ÎLE
Eastern part
-
The
Guard House. This is the first thing someone leaving the western portion
of the island encounters. Or should I say, trying to enter the eastern
part. Travel between the sick quarters located at the east end and the
rest of the island was strictly controlled for obvious reasons. After the
Guard House, going east, the central part of the island contains houses
for the staff and their family, a Catholic chapel and an Anglican chapel,
a school, the Marconi telegraph station and modern buildings erected in
1965 by the Department of Agriculture when they selected the island to
quarantine imported animals.
