Hazardous Waste Program

Do you have a pile of old paint cans, outdated pesticides and car maintenance products stuck in a corner of your garage? If the answer is yes, you are not alone. Most people find that over the course of a year or two or perhaps longer, they accumulate a quantity of leftover, unwanted home maintenance products. No one wants to put these things in the regular garbage but many don’t know what else to do.

Since 1993, the Centre and South Hastings Recycling Board has offered a program between Spring and Fall of the year in which homeowners can bring these "special wastes" to one of 12 collection events. Check out the 2000 Collection Schedule.

The products collected at these events are categorized and then either Reused, Recycled, or packaged for safe disposal.

Objectives of the Household Hazardous Waste Program

  1. To provide a cost effective and environmentally sound disposal option for hazardous products used in the home environment
  2. To ReUse as much of the material collected as possible to avoid over consumption and to reduce disposal costs.
  3. To provide and promote information on less environmentally harmful products

We collect a large variety of household and garden products. For a big listing of the materials that we accept, click here.

We run a very popular Reuse program called  “Giveaway Days” every Wednesday during the operating period (April - October) at the main depot in the City of Belleville.

We promote the use of “alternative” cleaners and gardening products through our Clean & Green program.

In addition to the HHW Program, we now offer collection and disposal of hazardous wastes from the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (IC&I) Sector through the ICIHW Program.
