Many people, upon getting their first composter, place it in the farthest corner of the yard, thinking that it may smell or attract pests.
The truth is that a well maintained composter simply does not create these problems. You would be much better off putting your composter in a spot that is easy to get to all year round. Far too many people stop composting during the winter months simply because it's too much bother to get to the composter. So put your composter in a place that will encourage you to keep using it all year round.
A sunny spot is fine, but don't sacrifice convenience for sun. Also, be sure the site is well drained
